Discover The Smith Restaurant’s Latest Location at 13|U!

May 23, 2018

Located in the heart of the vibrant U Street corridor, 13|U puts you closer to the latest in dining and entertainment. Discover the newest addition to this lively, exciting neighborhood, and head to the recently opened restaurant The Smith — located just steps outside of 13|U’s door!

The Smith is an NYC-based restaurant line that expanded from one location in New York’s East Village to six locations across Manhattan and Washington, D.C. Each location features a unique menu, and this newest location is no exception: The Smith’s U Street location features an expanded raw bar, house-made pastas, pizzas, boozy punch bowls, and slushy cocktails. With brunch served seven days a week, check out their selection of shareable main courses, including their mouthwatering lobster paella.

The new location also brings a unique aesthetic to the U Street corridor: designed by NYC-based Nemaworkshop and in collaboration with the District’s //3877 architecture firm, the industrial-inspired interior features classic brasserie elements and a 25-seat curved zinc bar. Striking black and white marble flooring in geometric patterns, chic subway tile, antique mirrors, and wall sconces with globe-like fixtures give off a soft glow and imbue the space with a clean, fresh vibe. For your larger get-togethers, a private dining area that can accommodate up to 30 guests is available to reserve.

We sat down and chatted with Dana Balding, brand manager for The Smith, about the latest opening and exclusive offerings.

One of The Smith’s core values is “Wait for the Great.” How did you know U Street was one of the great opportunities?
D.C. has such an exciting food scene, and the great energy of U Street is a perfect fit for the lively and welcoming vibe of The Smith. We’ve been looking for spaces in D.C. since 2013, and are so happy to be a part of the neighborhood!

What’s your favorite dish at this location? Favorite drink?
At the moment, we are most excited about the seasonal spring menu items and the French 75 slushy cocktail!
(We are all excited about The Smith’s cocktail offerings! Beverage director David Kravitz developed a handcrafted cocktail selection using small batch and local liquors, seasonal produce, and syrups and shrubs made and grown in-house. With house-made tonic and ginger beer on tap, local beers on draught and by the bottle, giant punch bowls, and a wine list with more than 20 wines by the glass or carafe, The Smith is our pick for summer happy hours!)

What is your favorite feature of the U Street location?
Our favorite feature is the expansive storefront with floor to ceiling windows that we open during the warmer months.

What are some of the hidden gems of the U Street location?
There is an old-school photo booth near the restrooms. (This photobooth is a favorite from the restaurant’s original location in New York City’s East Village neighborhood!) Also, rumor has it there’s a peephole that grants access to a vintage burlesque show — but we’ve never been able to find it.

So savor The Smith’s delicious offerings (they recommend the spicy fried chicken to share), just another unmatched feature in 13|U’s unrivaled lifestyle. Already a 13|U resident? The Smith’s U Street location offers priority reservations for residents only – just ask the concierge for the exclusive booking email address.
